Environmental Strategic Evaluation and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment of 2 Hydroelectric Power Plants in the Kwanza River

The aim of the Project is to construct a Hydroelectric Power Plant (Main Dam and Flood-Control Dam) in the Kwanza river basin, as well as the appropriate power transport line. Zenzo dam is 115 m high and 1 000 m long, with 1 900 hectares of the flood area. Its reservoir has a storage capacity of 510 000 000 m³. The primary purpose of the project is a hydroelectric power generation and its supports a power station with a rated capacity of 4 x 237,5 MW (950 MW total).

The Environmental Strategic Evaluation and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment included:

- Reference analysis and characterisation of the situation in the area affected by the construction of the ventures concerning different relevant aspects, namely climate, water quality and hydrology, ecology, socioeconomy, air quality, sound environment, architectonic and archaeological heritage, soil occupation and spatial planning;

- Identification and assessment of the environmental and social impacts concerning these environmental aspects, caused by the Project implementation (during the construction, exploration and deactivation phases);

- Proposition for mitigation measures for a reduction of the significance of identified environmental impacts;

- Proposition for compensatory policies;

- Proposition for monitoring programmes to follow the evolution of the area affected, in the analysed environmental aspects.
